Hotels, Apartelles and Hostels in the Philippines
We have stayed in all of the following hotels in rhe Philippines; and in hostels and pensiones.Room rates are generally much lower than at hotels in the USA.
Most hotels offer 24 hour check in. At these hotels you may check in at almost anytime and check out up to 24 hours later. For example, if you check in at 6 p.m. then your check out time will be 6 p.m. 24 hours later. I find that to be great for casual traveling. One may sleep very late into the morning, afternoon or evening. At other hotels it is necessary to be up and fully dressed in order to check out at noon or so. What a hassle and in many cases you lose a couple of hours of the day!
Some hotels and apartelles offer half day, quarter day and hourly room rates. Just ask when you contact apartelles, hostels, pensiones or hotels.

We flew to Cagayan de Oro, General Santos City and Cebu. Read about flying in the Philippines.
East Asia Royale Hotel, General Santos City, Mindanao |
East Asia Royale Hotel
This is the only really upscale hotel we stayed at. Great hotel, great food and not far from the malls.
Room rates at the East Asia Royale Hotel are $59 US for a standard room as of Sept. 6, 2012. Malls nearby, a club, fun pool hall, restaurants and shops on the hotel grounds.
Eurotel across Pedro Gil Street from main entrance to Robinsons Mall |
Eurotel
16 Pedro Gil St,. Ermita, Malate, Manila, Luzon, 1004, Philippines
Located on Pedro Gil St. across from the main entrance to Robinson's Mall. Ermita, Malate, Metro Manila
This is my favorite hotel in Metro Manila. Room rates at the Eurotel were about 1,900 pesos per day. Not a 24 hour hotel. Check in time is 2 p.m., check out time is 12 noon.
This hotel is a good place to stay near the US Embassy in Manila.
Amenities:
Air Conditioned rooms
Free parking under hotel and valet service
Free WIFI in rooms
24 hour room service
Free breakfast for two - 2 or 3 main entrees are mostly Filipino foods (fish, pork, sometimes chicken, rice), but they also provide cereal, milk, chilled orange juice, white rice, eggs cooked to order, toast and jam for Westerners. Be sure to ask what time breakfast service ends so that you don't miss it.
Dining room (eat breakfast here or in the Eurozen lounge)
Eurozen Lounge
Function rooms
Secure luggage storage
Elevator
Fire escape stairs with steel doors
It is about a 15 minute walk to the US Embassy on Manila Bay. Free internet access in your room. You can ask for a room without windows. We always stayed in a room like that; very quiet. If you will be staying several nights or several times ask for a wallet sized discount card which will allow a 10% discount. Plenty of good restaurants right across the street in the mall. There is a 7-11 on the corner nearby. A Western Union office is very close. The hotel has a van that can take you to the airport at any time for a reasonable fee of about 400 Pesos. We used it and it made travel to the airport pleasant and prompt. At the street right outside the front door you can ride any of many jeepneys or taxis to all points in Makati or Metro Manila.
Happy Coconuts Hostel
434 El Grande Ave., BF Homes, Sucat, Metro Manila
For backpackers and other guests. Really cheap. Room rates at the Happy Coconuts Hotel were about 700 or 800 pesos for 24 hours for a unit which shares a bath in the hall, but nice and clean. Only one other person used the bath while I was there.
I really like this place. Friendly staff, ready to serve 24 hours a day! Free internet access via a computer in the lobby, linens included, 24 hour reception, 24 hour check in, air conditioning,
private rooms with shared bath and private rooms with private baths. Free car park.
Snacks, sodas and fruit drinks available cheap and a refrigerator if you have food or drinks to keep cold.
I think there was a microwave also in the small kitchen. Short ride by jeep or tricycle to a 7-11 where you may buy ready made meals and heat them in a microwave.
Mariche Apartelle neon sign as seen from footbridge near SM Bacoor Mall |
Bacoor, Cavite
Low price. Room rates at the Mariche Apartelle were about 1,100 pesos per 24 hours. Rooms are clean. Daily (24 hours), half day room rates (12 hours), quarter day (6 hours) and hourly (1 hour) room rates are available for those wanting a short respite from travel or for businessmen or travelers wanting to rest and clean up. Across the street from SM Bacoor Mall. Standing in front of the mall, look across the street and to the right. You will see a big circular sign in the air with the word "Mariche" on it. Ask any tricycle driver near the mall to take you to the Mariche Apartelle across the street. Note: They leave windows open between guests. So, be sure to ask them to "spray the room for mosquitoes, then close the windows and turn on the A/C." and do not go in for an hour or so after they spray it.
24 hour room service is available for very reasonable prices.

Mariche accepts only cash. 24 hour room service is available and food is low cost but good.
Mariche Apartelle at Panapaan Rotunda, Cavite |
Demerin Hotel (No Website)
Demerin Hotel, Cagayan de Oro, on the island of Mindanao |
Low price, cash only. If I remember correctly the room rate was about 700 pesos for 24 hours. Nice room with A/C and tile floors. Has a small restaurant near the lobby. Security guard. Next door is the Inilog Grill, a fun place where you may enjoy live music; an island style open air eatery.
Lea's Pension House
Lea's Pension House, General Santos City, Mindanao |
Really cheap but nice air conditioned rooms. Cash only. If I remember correctly the room rates were 500 to 900 pesos for 24 hours.
We did not see any security guards there but we felt safe.
Dolores Hotel
Dolores Hotel, General Santos City, Mindanao
General Santos City, on Mindanao
A nice tiled room with TV and shower for a very reasonable rate. An armed security guard in the lobby. You might say this is a 'dirt cheap hotel'. But, it is a very nice place to stay. Friendly staff and clean room. Room rates were from about 500 to 700 pesos a day in 2007. See room rates by clicking on the hotel link.
Golden Valley Hotel
Golden Valley Hotel, Cebu City, Cebu |
The only hotel we stayed in that has a water softener that even serves the shower. What a lathery shower! Friendly and efficient staff and clean rooms. Ride a jeepney or ride a taxi to nearby points of interest including SM City Mall and the fabulous Ayala Center mall.
Room rates are $20 to $31 as of September 5, 2012. After, I believe, 4 visits you qualify for a wallet sized discount card which provides a 10% discount on future stays. So be sure to ask for it.

Another word of caution. Some doors have locks that also lock on the outside. You might not want to stay in that lodging. The Mariche Apartelle has such locks, though they never used them whenever I stayed there. I never asked why doors can be locked from the outside.
Note: to be fair to the Mariche Apartelle I must mention that I have stayed there for many nights on several occasions without incident and each time I have checked my laptop at the front office. So, all-in-all I consider it a good, inexpensive, place to stay.
Find really good deals on hotels worldwide. We were at a travel agency kiosk at a mall in Angeles City and asked "what is the lowest room rate you can get us in Singapore?" The agent gave us a rate and while she was looking it up I looked at the computer screen and saw that she was using the website at the link in this paragraph. Well, we went home and booked our room online through the site and saved over 50%!
